Vibration that increases with speed is almost always a wheel issue — balance, tyre, or rim. Vibration at idle is engine-related. Diagnosis is straightforward.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Vibration in steering above 60-80 km/h. Wheel balancing (₹400-800 per wheel) is a routine 30-minute job.
Vibration that worsens linearly with speed. Often visible as a bulge or cupping pattern on the tread. Replacement is the only fix.
Vibration after hitting a pothole. Rim straightening (₹800-2,500) often works for steel rims; alloys may need replacement.
Vibration at idle that smooths out at higher RPM. Cracked mounts (₹2,500-6,500) replaced in pairs for balance.
Wheel-related vibration usually peaks at 80-100 km/h. Driveline issues (universal joints, propshaft) vibrate at 40-60 km/h. Engine issues vibrate at idle.
If the cause IS imbalance, yes. If the tyre is damaged or the rim is bent, balancing is wasted money. Always have the tyre and rim inspected first.
Every tyre rotation (10,000-15,000 km). After any pothole impact. After any tyre repair.
