A serpentine belt squeak is annoying and a sign the belt is glazed, worn, or a tensioner is failing. Cheap to fix before it becomes a tow.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Cracks visible on the rib side. Replacement: ₹800-3,500 part + 30 min labour.
Squeak that comes and goes with engine load. Replace tensioner with belt: ₹2,500-6,500 total.
Specific squeak when one accessory is engaged (e.g., AC compressor). Diagnose by ear or stethoscope.
Belt edge wear visible. Pulley alignment check before replacement.
A few weeks at most. A snapped belt strands you (no AC, no power steering, no charging, possible overheating).
Temporarily yes — but it shortens belt life and is not a real fix. Just replace the belt.
Per manufacturer: every 80,000-1,50,000 km. Earlier if cracks are visible. Always replace tensioner + idler at the same time on cars >80,000 km.
