A check-engine light can mean anything from a loose fuel cap to a failing catalytic converter. The diagnostic process is the same: read the OBD-II code first, then act.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Surprisingly common. The evaporative-emissions system detects pressure loss and triggers the light. Tighten cap, drive 50 km — light often clears.
Most common cause on cars over 80,000 km. A worn O2 sensor sends bad mixture data to the ECU, hurting economy and emissions.
Often downstream of an ignored O2 sensor. Replacement is expensive (₹15,000-65,000) so catching upstream issues early is critical.
Cylinder misfire codes (P0300-series) usually trace back to a single coil or plug — fix is cheap if caught fast.
If the light is steady (not flashing), drive carefully to a workshop within a day or two. If FLASHING, stop immediately — flashing means active misfire that can destroy the catalyst (₹50,000+ damage).
OBD-II scan: free at most Autodots-verified workshops. Deeper diagnostic (live data, fuel-trim, ignition scope): ₹500-1,500. Always insist on a written diagnostic report before any repair quote.
You can disconnect the battery for 15 minutes — but if the underlying problem is real, the light returns within 50-100 km. Better to scan with an OBD reader (₹800 from Amazon) or visit a workshop.
