A burning smell is the engine telling you something is overheating. Differentiating between burning oil, burning coolant, burning rubber, and burning electrical is critical to know how urgently to act.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Oil leaking onto exhaust. Can lead to engine fire if severe. Diagnose immediately.
Coolant on a hot exhaust component. Stop driving — overheating risk is high.
Drive belt slipping or rubbing. Cheap fix (₹800-2,500) but needs immediate attention before belt snaps.
STOP IMMEDIATELY. A short-circuit or melting connector. Do not restart until diagnosed — risk of fire.
A short circuit is overheating wire insulation. Most often: blown fuse, faulty alternator, or damaged ground strap. Stop driving — re-starting risks ignition fire.
Drive belt slipping, brake caliper stuck, or rubber hose contacting hot exhaust. All have specific causes — diagnose before assuming the worst.
If electrical: NO — call a tow. If rubber/oil/coolant: drive directly to nearest workshop, no detours.
