Blue smoke means engine oil is burning in the combustion chamber. Worn rings, valve seals, or PCV failure — fixable but requires accurate diagnosis.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Burns oil under acceleration. Compression test diagnoses. Engine top-end overhaul (₹35,000-1,20,000) is the fix.
Burns oil only on cold start or after coasting. Less invasive repair (₹15,000-45,000) than ring job.
Burns oil at cruise. PCV valve replacement (₹500-2,500) is the cheap easy fix.
Blue smoke from the turbo side. Turbo rebuild (₹15,000-45,000) or replacement (₹35,000-1,20,000).
Modern engines: less than 1L per 5,000 km is normal. Anything more = something to diagnose. 1L per 1,000 km is significant burn.
Not always. Many blue-smoke cases are PCV or valve-stem seals, both far cheaper than a rebuild. Always do a compression + leak-down test before assuming worst case.
High-mileage oils (10W-40, 15W-50) can reduce consumption by thickening seals. Useful as a stopgap but doesn't fix the root cause.
