Black smoke means the engine is running too rich (too much fuel, not enough air). Common on diesels, less so on petrol. Cheap diagnosis, cheap fixes — usually.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Cheapest fix. ₹400-1,200 part, 5-minute job. Often resolves the issue entirely.
Engine ECU getting bad mixture data. Sensor replacement: ₹2,500-8,500.
Common on diesels at 1,00,000+ km. Injector flow-test before replacing — sometimes cleaning is enough.
Boost-pressure too high or too low = bad combustion. Turbo actuator (₹4,500-12,500) is the typical fix.
A puff under hard acceleration on older diesels: yes, that's "rolling coal". Constant black smoke is NOT normal — it indicates a real problem.
Long-term: yes. Excess fuel washes oil from cylinder walls, accelerating ring wear. Also clogs DPF on diesels.
New air filter (₹400-1,200). Often that's it — especially on older cars. If not, OBD-II scan ($1,500) reveals which sensor is failing.
