Brake noise tells you the system is sending a signal. Squealing usually means worn pads. Grinding means metal-on-metal — and rotor damage is being added every minute you keep driving.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Most common cause. Wear indicators are designed to squeal when pads have ~20% remaining. Replace before they're fully gone — saves the rotor.
Squealing without significant wear. Caused by overheating (sustained hard braking) or oil contamination. Pads can be sanded, but replacement is more reliable.
Light squeal that goes away after a few stops. Normal — surface rust grinds off naturally. If it persists, rotors may be pitted.
Pads completely worn through. Rotors are now being damaged. Stop driving — every brake event costs more in repair.
For a few days, no — if it's only the wear indicator. But each day of delay risks rotor damage (₹3,500-8,000 per pair) on top of pad cost (₹2,500-6,000). Get them replaced within a week.
Pads only (front pair): ₹2,500-6,000 + ₹500-1,200 labour. Pads + rotors (front pair): ₹6,000-15,000 + ₹800-1,500 labour. Premium brands (Brembo, Bosch) cost 30-50% more but last longer.
Surface rust from overnight humidity. Goes away after 2-3 brake events. Not a problem unless it persists or worsens.
