A small drip is annoying. A serious leak puts the engine at risk of seizure. Distinguishing them takes 5 minutes with a borescope and clean cardboard under the car.
In our network we see these in roughly this order. Diagnostic comes first — never authorise a repair without a written diagnostic report.
Most common. Oil drips down the engine from the top. Easy to clean and reseal: ₹1,500-4,500 depending on engine.
Drips from the lowest point. Replacement requires draining oil and lowering pan. ₹2,500-7,500 typically.
Front of engine (timing-belt area). Often replaced together with timing belt to save labour. Labour-intensive otherwise.
Surprisingly common. PCV valve stuck = pressure builds = oil pushed past seals. Cheap part (₹500-2,500) before sealing repair.
Slow drip: 100-500 ml per month. Active leak: 1-2L per month. Major leak: full sump in days. Check level weekly if you have a known leak.
For very minor weeps, yes — temporarily. They thicken the oil and may solve the leak for a few thousand km. Long-term, fix the gasket properly.
If oil light is OFF and level is above MIN, yes — but check level before every drive. If oil light comes ON, stop immediately to prevent engine seizure.
